We believe that the health of the teeth, gums, jaws, and salivary glands plays a pivotal role in maintaining the health of the other body systems. If you or your dentist notice changes or abnormalities in color, texture, or shape of the lining of the mouth you should be evaluated to determine the nature of the abnormality and whether or not a biopsy is needed. This evaluation is best performed by a clinician like an oral surgeon who has extensive surgical experience in pathological conditions in the mouth.
Abnormalities include red or white patches, sore or ulcers that do not heal, lumps or swelling in the mouth or neck, chronic hoarseness, persistent ear pain, jaw or tooth pain, or changes in jaw shape. Dr. Baker may recommend a biopsy, which can identify both common and serious conditions, ranging from benign lesions to oral cancer. The result of a biopsy, if needed, would determine next steps. Many benign conditions of the oral cavity, such as cysts or ulcers, can be monitored with regular exams but some benign entities warrant surgical removal. Malignancy, like oral cancer, is often treatable as well, and outcomes improve with early diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Baker will work with your dentist and primary care physician to provide the highest quality of care.
