A Patient’s Guide to IV Sedation for Oral Surgery

Oral surgery can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re anxious. Fortunately, IV sedation is a solution that allows patients to undergo treatment comfortably, safely, and stress-free. At Advanced Implant & Oral Surgery, board-certified oral surgeon Dr. Brandon Baker specializes in helping patients experience a pain-free, relaxed environment with IV sedation.

Dr. Baker offers multiple options to keep you comfortable during the procedure, from local anesthesia only to nitrous (laughing gas), moderate (twilight) IV sedation, and deep IV sedation. He is up-to-date with BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.

What Exactly Is IV Sedation?

IV (intravenous) sedation is an anesthetic technique used to help patients relax during oral surgery. An IV is placed in your arm and medications are administered through the IV; numbing injections are administered only after you are asleep. The effect is rapid and ensures you’re completely relaxed throughout the procedure.

Unlike general anesthesia, you will remain breathing on your own. Before, during, and after the procedure Dr. Baker will closely monitor your heart rate, EKG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, inspiration and expiration. He only sedates one patient at a time and will be fully focused on your care until you emerge from anesthesia. Dr. Baker offers deep IV sedation in which you will be fully unconscious as well as moderate (twilight) IV sedation. He will discuss your goals with you at your initial consultation to ensure you have the best experience possible.

Prior to IV sedation, there are important guidelines to follow to ensure your safety. You will need a driver and nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours prior to the procedure; further instructions will be provided in detail at your consultation.

For patients who experience high levels of dental anxiety or are undergoing extensive oral surgery, IV sedation ensures the experience is comfortable and stress-free.
