Bone Grafting and Reconstruction

Are you considering dental implants but have concerns about insufficient jawbone support? Were you told by a dental professional that you “don’t have enough bone?” Bone grafting might be the solution you’ve been looking for. At Advanced Implant & Oral Surgery, board-certified oral surgeon Dr. Brandon Baker specializes in providing patients with state-of-the-art bone grafting procedures to lay a solid foundation for a healthier smile. Bone grafts can be performed using local anesthesia only or under IV sedation.

What Is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure designed to preserve or augment bone in areas where it has been lost. This procedure is often necessary for patients preparing for dental implants. Implants require a specific volume of bone for successful long-term function.

From a 30,000 foot view, there are two categories of bone grafts: bone grafts that preserve your jaw and bone grafts that augment your jaw. Socket preservation bone grafts are placed at the time of tooth extraction if an immediate implant cannot be placed or if you are unsure if you want an implant placed; these types of grafts will preserve the width and height of the tooth socket.

Augmentation, or reconstruction, corrects larger horizontal or vertical bone defects and are sometimes needed prior to implant placement. Another type of augmentation bone graft in the upper jaw is called a sinus lift. In more extensive cases of bone loss, Dr. Baker will reconstruct the jaw using custom titanium mesh as a support for the bone graft while it heals.

Dr. Baker has extensive experience regrowing bone in all areas of the mouth. He uses donor bone, synthetic grafts, or bone taken from another area of the patient’s body and will work with you to determine the best approach for your needs. Over time, the graft stimulates natural bone regeneration, ensuring a solid base for implants or other dental restorations.

Why Might You Need Bone Grafting?

Several factors can lead to bone loss in the jaw, including:

  • Tooth Loss: When a tooth is lost or missing for an extended period, the surrounding bone begins to shrink due to a lack of stimulation.
  • Periodontal Disease: Gum disease can cause severe inflammation and bone deterioration over time.
  • Trauma or Injury: Accidents affecting the jaw can lead to bone loss or damage.
  • Developmental Conditions: Some individuals naturally have thinner jawbones, which may require enhancement for dental procedures.

If you fall into one of these categories, you’re not alone. Bone loss in the jaw is quite common, and bone grafting can make it possible to restore your oral health and pursue advanced dental treatments like implants.
