Microscopes in Dentistry

Because Bad Things Come in Small Packages

The human mouth isn’t a very big place. And the structures within your mouth are even smaller. Furthermore, most of the things that affect your oral health are just plain tiny. In fact, in dentistry, bad things can come in small packages…often invisible to the naked eye. Like decay that needs to be eliminated prior to restorative treatment. Or diseased areas requiring attention, like gum tissues or internal layers of your teeth. Or areas in need of repair, like chips, fractures, or enamel fissures. Naturally, we can see these concerns, the better work we can do, whether its preventive, restorative, or cosmetic. Which is why we often use microscopes.

Bigger is Better

Consider a root canal procedure, for example. Thorough cleaning out of debris and decay in the root canal itself is absolutely critical to the success of the treatment, and to the patient's long-term health. Of course, your dentist's task in such a case is to completely clean out all the harmful material, yet the area to be cleaned is the diameter of a minute hollow straw. Fortunately, with our illuminated high-powered dental microscope, we can clearly see all the areas within that tiny space and completely remove debris.  Microscopes also allow us to perform restorative and cosmetic procedures with unbeatable precision: accurately visualizing tooth surfaces and repair targets, then selecting appropriate materials and methods. No guess work, just attention to detail, accuracy of fit, beautiful shaping, and happy smiles!
